'The Hills' Was 'Not Scripted,' Kelly Cutrone Says

Was it real or fake? That's the question many fans seem to be considering since credits rolled on "The Hills" for the last time on Tuesday night. The show's creator, Adam DiVello, revealed on Thursday (July 15) that the final moment between Brody and Kristin was staged. But a onetime castmember of the hit reality series, PR maven Kelly Cutrone — now on MTV's "The City" — insists that everything else on the show is for real.

"Well, not really, because the show's not scripted," Cutrone told MTV News when asked whether fans should now re-think the show given the finale episode. "It's just not. I've been on the show, it's not scripted. I think it's a whole piss-take on everybody going, 'Is the show scripted? Is it not scripted?' "

Plus, Cutrone said, it was the best possible way to end a show that is, in fact, a reality show.

"I mean the show's got to end somehow, and if the show's based in reality, how do you end something that's real? I mean, what do you do? So the whole [thing] was a flip," she concluded. "I thought it was funny that it ended with Brody!"

The City Creator: Major Changes For Season 3

On the eve of The Hills' series finale, series creator and executive producer Adam DiVello is looking ahead to a new season of his other show, The City.

Led by Hills alum Whitney Port, the series wrapped its second season Tuesday with Port and BFF Roxy Olin still on the outs after a disagreement at work. Port was contemplating signing with one of her mentor's rival PR companies. Although the New York-based series has yet to be officially renewed for a third season, DiVello already has big changes in the works.

"We're kind of tooling with that and messing with that show so I think when it comes back, it's going to be a little different than what you've seen. But it will be a better incarnation of it," DiVello says. "We have a bunch of new people lined up and a bunch of new locations. We just kind of branched it out. We're just waiting for The Word."

Executive Producer Adam Divello on Finales

Tonight, MTV will air a finale double-feature, as “The Hills” and “The City” wrap up their story lines. In the case of “The Hills,” tonight’s episode marks the end of the series, after more than 100 episodes, incalculable tears and public breakdowns. Executive producer Adam Divello won't give out any details, but said the producers “shot a lot of surprises.”

The Wall Street Journal: How do you feel about “The Hills” ending after six seasons?

Adam Divello: It’s a bittersweet moment for us to see the series end. It was something we all felt that it was the right time.

Will there be any spin offs?

Never say never. There’s definitely been some interest but nothing is in the works right now.

Is there any truth to rumors that Stephanie Pratt will join the cast of “The City?”

We’ve never talked to Stephanie Pratt about coming to “The City,” so I don’t know. We are just wrapping up the second season of that show and we haven’t started on the third season. We haven’t gotten an official pick up yet.

Is that why rumors swirled that “The City” was cancelled?

I don’t know how any of this stuff gets planted. It hasn’t been canceled at all. We go through a stage of pre-production where we figure out what we would present next season, and we’re presenting that to the network. But it’s looking very positive that “The City” will return.

When we started out in season one, we were coming off of Whitney leaving the Hills. We went very relationship heavy the first season and I think it was fun to see Whitney dating and running around the city trying to her act together. The second season we went more work related because I think that’s the fun thing to watch. Like a lot of New Yorkers, they take their careers and their work very seriously. When we come back next season, I think a lot of the players are going to be in different places.

Olivia told us that she’s edited in a certain way because the show needs drama. Do you agree?

It’s not a documentary. We’re not following Olivia around 24 hours a day. It’s her under a microscope. It’s probably a slight exaggeration of who she is but it’s all based on [her]. We don’t write the lines for [the cast] and we don’t tell them what to say. What comes out of their mouths is what comes out of their mouths.

If Olivia left Elle magazine, would we get to follow Joe Zee and Erin Kaplan?

We would regroup and think, what do we do next? Do we follow her outside of Elle? Do we follow Elle without her? We would certainly approach Elle and say, ‘Who is going is going to take Olivia’s place, we want to follow that new person.’ We would certainly follow Olivia as she looks for another gig and lands another job.

Does Heidi return in the finale?

You have to wait and see.

Stephanie Pratt tweeted a photo of Converse shoes covered in photos of “The Hills” cast. Are these going to show up in stores now?

Abby, one of our camera operators, [received them as a gift from a friend] for the 100th episode. She wore them to set. Pictures were taken and circulated. It’s very strange to see our cast’s faces all over a pair of sneakers but they are a one of a kind, custom-made Converse.

The Dirty On 'The Hills' Rolling Stone Cover

Back in May '08, Lauren and Heidi had already had a major falling-out and were no longer speaking. So when Rolling Stone called and wanted to put all the stars of "The Hills" on the cover of the mag, the show's producers knew it would take some work to get them in the same room again to join Whitney and Audrina for the scantily clad photo shoot.

"You know, MTV press called us up and they said that Rolling Stone is interested in doing a cover for 'The Hills.' So, of course, you know, it's the best call you can get," show creator Adam DiVello recalled in an outtake from "The Hills: Revealed." "I mean, for me anyway, every cover to me is iconic. I love the magazine, and the thought of a show that I created getting on the cover of Rolling Stone to me was an end all, be all."

The cover came with one big caveat: "All four girls, bottom line, no ifs, ands or buts," DiVello recalled. "When you've got Rolling Stone calling [and] they want your cast on the cover of the magazine, but two of your castmembers don't want to be together in the same room — namely Lauren and Heidi — it seemed like it was never going to happen. I mean, there was a time when we thought, 'This is not going to happen,' because we were not going to get them together."

But it seemed like the magazine-cover gods were shining on them, and the shoot came together. "You get to the bottom of it and figure out how to make it happen," DiVello said. "And luckily, we pulled it off."

Adam Divello Talks 'The Hills' Finale, Aftershow

The Hills creator Adam DiVello appeared on On Air With Ryan Seacrest to tout the MTV hit's 100th episode, airing Tuesday -- plus the series finale slated for July 13.

"Everybody's kind of coming at peace with their stories that we've been following along," DiVello said of the finale. "A few of them definitely found happiness and what they were looking for."

And DiVello announced that the live finale aftershow will feature two old Hills friends: Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port.

"It will be a big party," DiVello said.
